It feels like all eyes are on the constantly fluctuating statistics and the maps of the U.S. dotted with red and blue. We won’t know until it’s all over, of course, but if we’re keeping an eye on anything leading up to the election, it should be the voters with the power to have a huge impact on the outcome: Gen Z. In the 2024 election, 41 million members of Gen Z will be eligible to vote, more than 8 million of those for the first time. What factors have shaped their views? What issues are weighing on them as they help choose the next President?

Over the last decade, SheKnows has had an ongoing series of discussions with members of Gen Z to gauge how they feel about serious and substantial topics such as politics, gender and racial equality, and women’s rights. We’ve checked in with them as they’ve grown from energetic kids to insightful teens to young adults poised to make their mark on the world. These evolving conversations have provided a fascinating glimpse into their opinions over the years, but more importantly, how they’re feeling now that they’re old enough to vote — and playing a pivotal part in choosing our next President.

Gen Z Voters: By the Numbers — & Beyond

Nearly half of Gen Z voters (45 percent in the general electorate and 47 percent of newly eligible voters) are people of color, making Gen Z more racially and ethnically diverse than previous generations. But their diversity isn’t all that sets them apart — not by a long shot. Gen Z has spent their teen and young adult years trying to navigate a complex web of interconnected crises, including systemic racism, gender-based violence, crippling student debt, and erosion of reproductive and gender rights, set against the ominous backdrop of climate change. They’ve seen only elections that feel polarizing and divisive, if not downright hostile. Older members of Gen Z report feeling disillusioned by the surge of negativity, misinformation, and harmful rhetoric that has dominated the past three election cycles; they’re tired and cynical, skeptical of each party’s true intentions.

Because of this, the resulting fear and uncertainty that many Gen Z-ers feel for their future has made them especially engaged in social activism, and deeply connected to the causes they’re passionate about. “They lean less into party divisions and are particularly motivated by the issues,” Emily Slatkow, communications director for the progressive youth voting organization NextGen America, said in an article for NBC News.

A recent survey revealed that almost one-third of Gen Z (32 percent) report being regularly active in social justice work, as opposed to just 24 percent of millennials — a number that goes up to roughly 40 percent among college-aged Gen Zers. For 62 percent of Gen Z activists, moral conviction is the top driver; they’re compelled by a deep sense of what is right. Another key motivator, cited by over half, is a personal connection — either their own experiences or those of close friends and family — which sparks their passion for specific social causes.

Back in 2020, a Pew Survey found that 22 percent of registered voters aged 18 to 23 — the oldest members of Gen Z — approved of how Donald Trump was handling his job as President, while about three-quarters disapproved (77 percent). In a September 2024 survey by NBC News, half of Gen Z voters say they’re planning to vote for Vice President Kamala Harris in November, while one-third say they’ll vote for former President Donald Trump; still a bigger gap for Harris, but not quite the majority seen in the 2020 election. The Fall 2024 Harvard Youth Poll, conducted by the Institute of Politics (IOP) at the Harvard Kennedy School, saw Harris leading Trump by a large margin — 64 percent versus 32 percent among likely voters.

Interestingly, while both genders are leaning heavily toward Harris, the rate of female support has far surpassed males; the gender gap, which stood at 17 points in the Spring poll, has nearly doubled and is now at 30 points. “There is this unprecedented gap in Gen Z, in the under 30s, in terms of political affiliation and voting intention. But it’s also worth emphasizing that more of that gap may be driven by the move of young women to the left than it is of young men to the right, Richard V. Reeves, author of the book Of Boys and Men: Why the Modern Male Is Struggling, Why It Matters, and What to Do About It, told SheKnows. “I think that for most young men it’s actually more a question of feeling quite politically homeless. They don’t see much on the left for them, for sure. And I don’t necessarily think they’re wrong about that.”

But if talk doesn’t turn into action, none of these statistics will matter one iota, which brings us to the biggest question: Will Gen Z show up at the polls? According to the Harvard Youth Poll, absolutely. “Fifty-six percent of young Americans tell us they plan to ‘definitely’ vote in the upcoming election,” the findings state. “Among registered voters, the number rises to 72 percent.” This number has been bolstered by the surprising mid-race candidate swap. Before Harris took over as the Democratic nominee, Gen Z’s motivation to vote was much more lukewarm. “What I’m hearing from my generation, or my peers, is that people aren’t going to vote at all because they’re not feeling satisfied or represented by either of the big options,” Amelia, 21, told SheKnows prior to Biden’s departure from the race. Now, it’s a totally different story.

“Much of this increased enthusiasm among [Gen Z] Democrats is tied to Kamala Harris as their party’s nominee,” says the Harvard Poll. “More than four-in-five (81 percent) of Harris supporters in a direct match-up with Trump are enthusiastic about voting for her, nearly doubling the 43 percent of Biden supporters who said the same in March.” It can’t hurt that Harris’s campaign has intentionally set out to appeal largely to Gen Z voters; after all, teens do spend an average of 8.5 hours a day on screens, swiping through their social media.

The enthusiasm for Harris may be renewed, but it certainly isn’t new. “I hope that a woman could one day be President. I hope that a person of color could be President again,” Gen Z panelist Reed told us in 2020. “And I think that one thing we need to address is this country’s issue with women in office.” And in the same year, fellow panelist Jack mused, almost prophetically, “I don’t know what’s going to happen in four years. I think [Kamala Harris] would be a good President. I’d support her. I’d be able to vote then.”

Well, folks, “then” is now — and it’s Gen Z’s time to be heard. Will they realize the full potential of their impact and turn out in record numbers to vote? It’s a question we’ve waited for the past 10 years to answer … and in two weeks, we’ll all know. In the meantime, watch the full video to see the evolution of these first-time voters.

Ivanka Trump Picked a Side in Donald Trump's Feud With Taylor Swift https://www.sheknows.com/entertainment/articles/1234725376/ivanka-trump-attended-taylor-swift-concert-miami/ https://www.sheknows.com/entertainment/articles/1234725376/ivanka-trump-attended-taylor-swift-concert-miami/#respond Wed, 23 Oct 2024 18:34:37 +0000 https://www.sheknows.com/?p=1234725376 Ivanka Trump made it clear that she was not going to be a part of Donald Trump’s politics this time around, and she meant it

The 42-year-old Miami socialite decided not to get in the middle of her dad’s feud with Taylor Swift. Instead, she chose to take her 13-year-old daughter Arabella to one of the 34-year-old pop star’s concerts in Florida over the weekend, according to People. Arabella has been a Swiftie for quite some time, even enjoying a Swift-themed cake for her birthday in July.

The treat was in the shape of a heart with a lyric from the musician’s 2014 single, “Blank Space.” The icing read, “Boys only want love if it’s torture.” Mom loved it too. Ivanka wrote on the image from her Instagram page, “best cake for my favorite swiftie” after the family had dug a few slices out of it. Arabella’s grandfather, however, has different feelings about the billionaire.

Donald Trump caused confusion in mid-August when he posted snapshots that implied Swift endorsed him for president. He shared three images of young women wearing T-shirts with the slogan, “Swifites for Trump.” The former president also added an AI-generated photo of Swift dressed as Uncle Sam with the message, “Taylor wants you to vote for Donald Trump.” He happily captained the Truth Social post, “I accept!

Of course, every candidate wanted Swift’s endorsement, but that honor went to Vice President Kamala Harris on Sept. 10 after the presidential debate. “I will be casting my vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the 2024 Presidential Election,” she said in a strong message to her Instagram followers. “I’m voting for @kamalaharris because she fights for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to champion them.”

On Sunday, Sept. 15, Donald Trump revealed his reaction to the pop star’s endorsement. He wrote in all capital letters on Truth Social, “I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT!” He also went on Fox & Friends the next day to complain about the “Shake It Off” singer. “I was not a Taylor Swift fan,” he said. “It was just a question of time. … But she’s a very liberal person. She seems to always endorse a Democrat. And she’ll probably pay a price for it in the marketplace.”

Well, there are still plenty of Swifties left in the Trump family, and that includes Ivanka and Arabella. The former president’s oldest daughter wasn’t going to deny her teen the pleasure of attending one of the hottest concerts of the year. Instead, she picked a side and Swift won.

Ivanka Trump’s Absence From Donald Trump’s Campaign Might Signal a Fracture in the Family https://www.sheknows.com/entertainment/articles/1234723659/ivanka-trumps-absence-donald-trump-campaign-feud/ https://www.sheknows.com/entertainment/articles/1234723659/ivanka-trumps-absence-donald-trump-campaign-feud/#respond Sat, 19 Oct 2024 17:36:30 +0000 https://www.sheknows.com/?p=1234723659 If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, SheKnows may receive an affiliate commission.

Ivanka Trump told the public two years ago that she was not joining Donald Trump’s third run for president, and she has stuck to her word. She did make a brief appearance at the Republican National Convention in July as a spectator, but her lack of support might signal something bigger that’s going on in the Trump family.

Eric Trump and Donald Trump Jr. have taken on more prominent roles in the presidential campaign as Ivanka and her husband, Jared Kushner, took a step back — and not everyone likes this change. “Different family members are the faces this time around and who are they? They’re the more MAGA. Junior is clearly MAGA. Lara Trump is a MAGA idiot, and her husband Eric is the same way,” former Republican congressman Joe Walsh told The Guardian. “Jared Kushner and Ivanka were never that way. They’re more polite, kind of high society folks so they were never really meshed with the whole MAGA thing.”

US President Donald Trump and Senior Advisor to President Trump, Ivanka Trump participate in the "White House Summit on Human Trafficking: The 20th Anniversary of the Trafficking Victims Protection Act of 2000" event in the East Room of the White House on January 31, 2020 in Washington, DC.

With Melania Trump focused on the promotion of her memoir, Melania, son Barron, 18, enjoying his freshman year at New York University and daughter Tiffany Trump pregnant with her first child, there appears to be two factions of the Trump family right now. “You know Trump is losing because Jared, Ivanka, and Melania are nowhere to be seen. If he was really ahead, they’d be all over the Campaign like jackals on a two-day-old gazelle corpse,” claimed Rick Wilson, co-founder of the anti-Trump group, the Lincoln Project to the media outlet.

In November 2022, Ivanka bowed out gracefully from politics for good. “I love my father very much. This time around I am choosing to prioritize my young children and the private life we are creating as a family. I do not plan to be involved in politics,” she said in a statement to CNN. “While I will always love and support my father, going forward I will do so outside the political arena. I am grateful to have had the honor of serving the American people and I will always be proud of many of our Administration’s accomplishments.”

In May 2024, there was a rumored return to politics, per Puck News, but it only appears to be a brief flirtation. A source told the outlet that she was “warming to the idea of trying to be helpful.” The insider added, “[She’s] privately not ruling out having some sort of role. She’s not like ‘Hell no’ anymore.” That Ivanka renaissance did not come to fruition as she and Kushner focused on their socialite lives and the construction of a luxurious resort in Albania

If Donald Trump does return to the White House, it’s unclear if Melania is even interested in the first lady position. Ivanka and Kushner won’t be there either, so it leaves a big question mark as to how united the Trump family will be if he returns to Washington, D.C.

Donald Trump Makes Rare Comments About Son Barron’s Personal Life https://www.sheknows.com/parenting/articles/1234723380/donald-trump-comments-barron-trump-personal-life/ https://www.sheknows.com/parenting/articles/1234723380/donald-trump-comments-barron-trump-personal-life/#respond Fri, 18 Oct 2024 17:33:29 +0000 https://www.sheknows.com/?p=1234723380 Former President Donald Trump doesn’t often talk about his youngest son Barron Trump, 18, who he shares with wife Melania Trump (unless it benefits him politically, that is). But the 78-year-old shared rare details about Barron’s personal life in a new interview, which was full of praise for the NYU student.

On Patrick Bet-David’s PBD Podcast, the Republican presidential nominee called his son “good-looking,” before revealing that he has never been in a relationship (that Trump knows of). “I’m not sure he’s there yet. I don’t think he’s had a girlfriend yet,” Trump said, per Page Six.

Trump gave the speech in front of 1500 invited guests.

It makes sense that Trump isn’t quite sure if his son has had a girlfriend or not (I guess?) because Melania has said that she calls all the shots when it comes to Barron. In an interview on Fox News Channel’s Fox & Friends last month, the Melania author revealed, “I was always perfectly fine with one [child]. And Donald was encouraging [us] to have more,” she said. “And I said, like, ‘I’m completely fine with one because it’s [a] very busy life.’ I know how busy he is … and I’m in charge of everything. So that’s why. It’s just perfect.”

There you have it. If Barron did have a girlfriend, he and Melania must have just never felt the need to tell the family patriarch.

During the interview with PBD Podcast, Trump also called Barron “very smart,” a “very nice guy,” and a “good student.” He added, “He doesn’t mind being alone, but he’s somebody that gets along with people.”

This backs up what former schoolmates from Oxbridge Academy have said about the younger Trump when he was in high school. In July, some of his friends told Daily Mail that Barron had a code name at school, was constantly followed by Secret Service, and didn’t “participate in sports, attend parties or eat his meals with the rest of the school” to ensure his privacy.

“Barron was very funny and sociable. He would start the most random conversations and could be very entertaining,” a pal told the outlet. “[But] he was also very mysterious. He never attended football games or dances. I don’t think he met up with anyone outside of school or went on dates. If he had a girlfriend, it was top secret. We never knew about it.”

Trump is also dad to Donald Jr., born in Dec. 1977, Ivanka, born in Oct. 1981, and Eric, born in Jan. 1984, with late wife Ivana Trump, and daughter Tiffany, born in Oct. 1993, with ex-wife Marla Maples.

Melania Trump’s Rare Appearance With Donald Trump Aligns With Her Reaching This Major Milestone https://www.sheknows.com/entertainment/articles/1234723354/melania-trump-makes-new-york-times-bestseller-list/ https://www.sheknows.com/entertainment/articles/1234723354/melania-trump-makes-new-york-times-bestseller-list/#respond Fri, 18 Oct 2024 17:04:00 +0000 https://www.sheknows.com/?p=1234723354 If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, SheKnows may receive an affiliate commission.

Melania Trump has been scarce on the campaign trail, preferring to live her own life outside of her husband, Donald Trump. He’s trying to win back the White House and she’s been busy promoting her new memoir, Melania. Still, the former first lady made a rare appearance at the Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner in New York City on Thursday, Oct. 16.

The last time the public has seen Melania with the former president at an event was the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee in July — and she kept a relatively low profile there. The NYC event to benefit Catholic charities has been a must-attend night on the campaign trail for both Democrats and Republicans since the 1960s. That’s why an NBC News source said Melania was in attendance, noting, “It’s tradition,” while also hinting that “this could be a precursor to more activity.”

Melania’s attendance came at a very important time in her publishing career because her book hit a major milestone: she’s a New York Times bestselling author. Donald Trump bragged about this wife during his speech at Thursday’s event. “Can you believe she did a book,” he gushed, per The Daily Beast. “It’s a really good book and she worked hard on it, it just became number one on the New York Times list, that’s an easy thing to do especially when your name is Trump.”

Of course, he had to pat himself on the back, even though it was her accomplishment. Melania also made headlines for declaring her stance on abortion in the book at a time when women’s reproductive rights were being attacked. “Restricting a woman’s right to choose whether to terminate an unwanted pregnancy is the same as denying her control over her own body,” Melania wrote. “I have carried this belief with me throughout my entire adult life.”

That’s a far different opinion from her husband, who stacked the Supreme Court with conservative judges who overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022. It’s a hot-button election-year issue that could help determine who becomes president in less than three weeks. Will Melania’s beliefs help or hurt Donald Trump’s chances? She doesn’t seem bothered either way since she doesn’t share the same political ambitions as her husband. Instead, she’s looking to move more merchandise and books because it wouldn’t be surprising for her to do a follow-up publication after her big success.

Donald Trump Reportedly Has To Make This Major Sacrifice Ahead of the Presidential Election https://www.sheknows.com/entertainment/articles/1234720377/donald-trump-gives-up-golf-presidential-election/ https://www.sheknows.com/entertainment/articles/1234720377/donald-trump-gives-up-golf-presidential-election/#respond Fri, 11 Oct 2024 15:39:10 +0000 https://www.sheknows.com/?p=1234720377 If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, SheKnows may receive an affiliate commission.

Donald Trump has been put on pause with his favorite pastime while he is running for president, and he’s probably not happy about it. The former president has been told to give up his beloved game of golf — for now.

The 2024 GOP candidate has not played a round of golf since Sept. 15 when there was a second assassination attempt on his life, according to NBC News. His golf clubs are going to collect a bit of dust in the meantime, because another source confirmed with the media outlet that he has to put his passion on hold until after Nov. 5 — a request that was handed down by the Secret Service.

Former President Donald Trump hits his shot from the first fairway during the pro-am prior to the LIV Golf Invitational – Bedminster at Trump National Golf Club on August 10, 2023 in Bedminster, New Jersey.

Ryan Routh was arrested after laying down by “the brush along the fence line near the sixth hole,” waiting for the former president at the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida, on Sept. 15, per the Justice Department. He pleaded not guilty to charges of an attempted assassination of a major presidential candidate and could face life in prison if he is convicted. Despite the arrest, Donald Trump’s golf game is on ice — and that has to hurt.

Donald Trump was often criticized for spending more time on the golf course than he did in the White House. CBS News White House correspondent Mark Knoller told CNN in May 2020 that former President Barack Obama “played golf once every 8.77 days as president. Trump, conversely, has been at a golf club once every 4.92 days.” The other well-known detail about Donald Trump’s golf game is that he likes to win at all costs — yep, there’s some cheating happening out there on the green.

“I’ve always said golf is like bicycle shorts. It reveals a lot about a guy,” sportswriter Rick Reilly joked on Deadline White House with Nicolle Wallace in March. “And what it reveals about this guy is that he cannot lose. He has to win, and he will do anything to cheat.” The Commander in Cheat: How Golf Explains Trump author “played golf with him” and claimed that Donald Trump “took seven mulligans” during their 18-hole round.

Perhaps it’s best if Donald Trump takes a break from his golf game — for safety reasons, and so others can finally win. Then again, anyone who plays with him knows that Donald Trump needs to come out on top. Boxer Oscar De La Hoya spoke on the record to the Associated Press in 2016 after playing a round of golf with Donald Trump where the former president boldly cheated twice. “Yes, I caught him,” De La Hoya said. “It was unbelievable. But I guess it was his course, so it was his rules.”

Donald Trump Reveals Daughter Tiffany Is Pregnant — & He Had Quite the Lukewarm Reaction https://www.sheknows.com/parenting/articles/3117181/donald-trump-daughter-tiffany-trump-pregnant/ https://www.sheknows.com/parenting/articles/3117181/donald-trump-daughter-tiffany-trump-pregnant/#respond Thu, 10 Oct 2024 21:17:47 +0000 https://www.sheknows.com/?p=3117181 Donald Trump announced some major family news while campaigning in Michigan. His youngest daughter, Tiffany Trump, is expecting her first child with husband Michael Boulos. And his delivery was pretty … meh.

The former president was speaking to the Detroit Economic Club and revealed that Tiffany’s father-in-law, Massad Boulos, was in attendance.

“He happens to be the father of Tiffany’s husband, Michael, who’s a very exceptional young guy,” Trump told the crowd, per USA Today.

“And she’s an exceptional young woman, and she’s going to have a baby, so that’s nice,” he continued.

… So that’s nice?! Talk about a lackluster announcement! You would think he would be a little more excited about this new addition to the family, but apparently it’s just “nice.” Is Trump just over the whole grandkid thing? As a grandfather of 10, has expanding the family lost its appeal?

(ICYMI: Trump’s eldest son, Donald Jr., has two daughters and three sons between the ages of 10 and 17. His secondborn, Eric, has a 5-year-old daughter and a 7-year-old son, and his thirdborn, Ivanka, has three kids between the ages of 8 and 13.)

It was a strange throwaway of an announcement and an even stranger lack of enthusiasm, but, I guess one could say Trump sharing the news with prospective voters was … “nice.” That is unless you’re Tiffany and hoped to share the news yourself. The TV personality has not made her own announcement, but a spokesperson confirmed the news to People.

Tiffany and Boulos met at Lindsay Lohan’s beach club in Mykonos, Greece in the summer of 2018. Boulos later proposed in the White House Rose Garden during Trump’s presidency, and the couple married in the fall of 2022 at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida.

Which is … ya know … nice.

These celebrities are expecting babies in 2024!

Yes, Your Teen Does Need to Register to Vote Today — Here's How to Help https://www.sheknows.com/parenting/articles/2349972/teens-register-to-vote/ https://www.sheknows.com/parenting/articles/2349972/teens-register-to-vote/#respond Wed, 09 Oct 2024 13:22:45 +0000 https://www.sheknows.com/?p=2349972 If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, SheKnows may receive an affiliate commission.

If you’ve been voting for a while, you might be seeing a lot of messaging this time of year around making sure your voter registration is up-to-date. But if you’ve got an 18-year-old in your life, you have some more homework on your hands this election season. In the event that your kid isn’t already one of those politically-active Gen Z types, this task could be difficult. We’d like to give you a little help with that.

If your teenager is reluctant or apathetic about the upcoming election, you’re not alone. Young voter turnout is notoriously low if improving. Tufts estimated that 50 percent of young people ages 18-29 voted in the 2020 presidential election, which is a significant jump from just 39 percent in the 2016 presidential election.

“In interviews with dozens of young people, we found that many of them lacked confidence in themselves and their ability to navigate the voting process for the first time,” John Holbein, assistant professor of public policy and education at the University of Virginia, wrote in the Conversation ahead of the 2020 presidential election. “Many told us that in their busy, hectic, and ever-changing schedules, voting often simply falls by the wayside.

“Simply put, many young people want to participate, care about what happens in the political arena, and plan to participate,” Holbein continued, “but they find doing so too big of a hassle to actually follow through on their good intentions.”

Holbein suggests that the easiest way to fix this problem is to make voter registration easier, which is happening in some states that have same-day voter registration. At the moment, however, we’ve got to get to help these kids register ASAP — before those laws can change.

Find an issue that motivates them

The youth-led gun-sense group Students Demand Action (an offshoot of Everytown for Gun Safety and Moms Demand Action) has been holding voter registration drives and has resources for teens who want to hold their own drive.

Students Demand Action volunteer Alanna Miller, a then second-year student at Duke University, gave us a few tips on how she gets other young people to register ahead of the 2020 presidential election:

“When registering other young voters, I remind them that our generation has grown up in the midst of our country’s gun-violence crisis,” she told SheKnows via email. “And of course, now, the recent police killings of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, and the shooting of Jacob Blake and so many others have added even more urgency to conversations around police violence as part of gun violence, and their disproportionate impact on Black people in America. Young people are eager to elect leaders who will do something about gun violence and police violence.”

The key to her approach is explaining that the youth vote can really make a difference if they turn out.

“Young voters who are motivated to end gun violence in America should know that there is room for change … ” she said. “Gun violence prevention consistently ranks as a top issue for young voters, so we know if young voters get registered, and turn out to vote, we can be a huge force … “

Find out what issues are really important to your teen, and then do the research together on what elected officials have said about it. They may have taken in rhetoric about politicians not caring and everyone being “the same,” but it’s up to you to talk about how that’s not the case. Look at local politics and laws that have been passed that directly impact your lives and discuss how your city, state, and U.S. representatives have acted — or haven’t — in your interest. Then look at a ballot and see how the people running this year might change that or might be inclined to listen once they’re in office.

Physically help them register

As Holbein wrote, many people feel like registering to vote is a huge headache, and it really doesn’t have to be. Head over to RocktheVote.org or Vote.org for multiple ways to register. Help them gather the information they’ll need for your state like their social security number, driver’s license, or ID number. You may be able to do everything online, but if something needs to be printed and mailed, you should have that prepared too. Anything you can do to smooth the way for them is great, and this is one time when no one will mind you helping a teen with their homework — just so long as they choose their own party affiliation (if any) and sign their names themselves.

Get Them Some Voting Swag

Some sweet voting merch from places like Etsy and UncommonGoods could be exactly what your teen needs to get in the patriotic spirit, register to vote, and then actually show up to the polls.

Do it on time

Voter registration deadlines vary by state and by each registration method. For instance, some states have different deadlines for voters who are registering in person versus online or by mail. Some states offer day-of registration, but make sure you have all your papers in order if your young voter plans to register at the polls on Nov. 5.

Prepare the next round of voters

Parenting expert and psychologist Reena B. Patel has a few tips for how to raise voters from a very young age. First, you need to be a role model by voting yourself and talking about who you’re voting for and why. Then talk about politics on a large and small scale.

“Talk with your child about how you handle disagreements in your home,” she said. “Politics can get heated, and it is important to let your child know that at the end of the day we come together for a bigger cause.”

And if the adults in our government can’t also figure out that particular lesson, we can vote them out!

Melania Trump Finally Gives Her Side of the Story With Infamous Donald Trump Hand 'Swat' https://www.sheknows.com/entertainment/articles/3115316/melania-trump-explanation-donald-trump-hand-swat/ https://www.sheknows.com/entertainment/articles/3115316/melania-trump-explanation-donald-trump-hand-swat/#respond Tue, 08 Oct 2024 18:10:33 +0000 https://www.sheknows.com/?p=3115316 If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, SheKnows may receive an affiliate commission.

Melania Trump’s memoir, Melania, was released on Tuesday, Oct. 8 and it finally gave her version of events to the hand “swat” heard around the world. The internet lost its mind in May 2017 when the former first lady was visiting Tel Aviv, Israel with Donald Trump.

As they were exiting Air Force One, the cameras caught the former president trying to reach for his wife’s hand as they walked down the red carpet. A moment later, it looked like she moved his hand away in annoyance or anger — whatever it was, it became a viral video. In an excerpt from her book, via Variety, Melania shared her side of the story. She described it as a “mere misunderstanding” due to the “protocol” of the event — “the president and prime minister walk side by side, with their spouses trailing behind.”

Former first lady Melania Trump joins Republican presidential nominee, former U.S. President Donald Trump on stage after he officially accepted the Republican presidential nomination on the fourth day of the Republican National Convention at the Fiserv Forum on July 18, 2024 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

However, things didn’t go as planned, and “[Prime Minister] Bibi [Netanyahu] ended up holding his wife’s hand, and my husband walked beside them — three abreast.” Melania wrote, “The red carpet simply could not accommodate all four of us abreast. I allowed my husband to continue walking with the prime minister and his wife, opting to take a step back.” That’s when the real mayhem began.

“When he reached out to offer his hand, I declined, indicating that I was perfectly content walking on my own. It was a minor innocent gesture, nothing more,” she continued. That is at least Melania’s version of events even if the video seems to show something different — but protocol is protocol and we aren’t often privy to that situation. The real issue is that the swatting happened more than once during Donald Trump’s administration and the former first lady didn’t offer any further insight into those incidents.

Donald Trump’s former lawyer Michael Cohen offered his perspective on their marriage and the hand-holding issues on The Official Mea Culpa podcast in 2020.

“There was a time that things looked a little bit iffy in their marriage you may recall where she wouldn’t hold his hand . . . it’s very possible that they then sat, they brought the lawyers in and they redid the agreement . . . I think she may have potentially — I’m only speaking from opinion I don’t know it to be fact, but I think, knowing Melania — being calculating, which she is — she may have upped the ante at some point,” Cohen said.

The public may never know the real truth about the couple’s marriage which seems to draw fascination from everyone. Melania marches to the beat of her own drum that sometimes feels like she’s calling the shots behind closed doors and rarely wants to be seen with her husband in public.

Melania Trump Hints at Troubled Relationships With Donald Trump’s Adult Children in New Memoir https://www.sheknows.com/entertainment/articles/3114570/melania-trump-relationship-donald-trump-adult-children/ https://www.sheknows.com/entertainment/articles/3114570/melania-trump-relationship-donald-trump-adult-children/#respond Mon, 07 Oct 2024 17:26:04 +0000 https://www.sheknows.com/?p=3114570 If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, SheKnows may receive an affiliate commission.

Melania Trump’s memoir, Melania, drops on Tuesday, Oct. 8, and it’s sure to be a hit. It currently stands at No. 2 on the Amazon Charts because her fans are clamoring for an inside look at her mysterious life with Donald Trump. While her world may look easy from outside the walls of Mar-a-Lago, the former first lady hints that her relationships with her husband’s adult children might not be smooth sailing behind closed doors.

According to an excerpt obtained by The Daily Beast, Melania noted the “intricate dynamics” when it comes to interacting with Donald Trump Jr., Ivanka Trump, Eric Trump, and Tiffany Trump, from the former president’s marriages to Ivana Trump and Marla Maples — and it sounds complicated. “While I do not agree with every opinion or choice expressed by Donald’s grown children, nor do I align with all of Donald’s decisions, I acknowledge that differing viewpoints are a natural aspect of human relationships,” Melania wrote vaguely in her memoir.

U.S. President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump is introduced by his daughter and White House senior adviser, Ivanka Trump, as he prepares to deliver his acceptance speech for the Republican presidential nomination on the South Lawn of the White House August 27, 2020 in Washington, DC. Trump gave the speech in front of 1500 invited guests.

While it sounds like she doesn’t want to drudge up any dirty Trump family laundry, it’s no secret that Melania and Ivanka didn’t see eye to eye when during Donald Trump’s administration. Katie Rogers’ book, American Woman: The Transformation of the Modern First Lady, from Hillary Clinton to Jill Biden, took a closer look at the women’s frosty relationship.

The former first lady called Ivanka “The Princess” behind her back, per Rogers, and they were often “locked in a quiet competition for press coverage.”  Stephanie Winston Wolkoff shared similar stories about Melania and Ivanka’s rivalry in her 2020 book, Melania and Me: The Rise and Fall of My Friendship with the First Lady.

“Melania lived in New York. She didn’t appear in public or release statements to the press. Her social media was quiet,” Wolkoff wrote. “Ivanka rushed in to fill the void as ‘acting’ First Lady, issuing constant social media posts and press releases galore about her involvement with women’s issues, lobbying Daddy about climate change (alas, unsuccessfully), and attending every meeting she could slink her way into.”

Melania probably didn’t want to dive into the family politics in her memoir, especially during an election year. Her book appears to give a much glossier version of her first date with Donald Trump to their A-list wedding — it’s a look back at what their life was like as Manhattan socialites instead of controversial public figures.
