The latest all-the-rage toy every maker has in their repertoire is the suction sex toy: the most clit-literate (cliterate!) and deeply entertaining of the commonly found toy designs.

What is a suction vibrator (or, as most of us will call them clitoral stimulator or suction toys) and how does it work? Well, suction toys use the power of air (or sonic waves, in one case) to create a highly stimulating sensation on and around the clitoris. As you may or may not know, the clitoris is a bigger-on-the-inside marvel of biological machinery that people with vulvas have. Research says it has nearly 8,000 nerve endings in that concentrated area. So yeah, it is a fun lil piece of anatomy many of us have and a great target of pleasure for people who like this kind of stimulation — and it deserves all the love we can give.

So the suction toy’s ability to surround the clit and give it a wealth of strong but not abrasive buzzing — which has its place, but sometimes can be too much for this sensitive spot — is part of why they are such a hit. It’s a sensation that comes pretty close to a specific kind of oral sex (think more sucking and less licking action) and, if you’re having more than one clitoral O in a short period of time, they can be great helpers in making sure the overstimulation doesn’t veer into the side of uncomfortable (unless you’re into that, then go off). And, on top of that, they can often be used to stimulate your nipples too, which is a pretty solid two-fer.

These toys are generally on the quiet side, easy to use on yourself or a partner, rechargeable (no cords or plugs other than a USB charger) and a good number of them are waterproof.  Because of those features, they should check a lot of the modern “yes please” qualities most people are looking for in a toy. So read on for a selection of some of our favorite little suckers on the market — and we promise you this: They suck in the best possible way.

13 Celebs Who Battled Sex Addiction https://www.sheknows.com/health-and-wellness/slideshow/2711059/celebrities-sex-addiction/ https://www.sheknows.com/health-and-wellness/slideshow/2711059/celebrities-sex-addiction/#respond Fri, 18 Oct 2024 21:00:49 +0000 https://www.sheknows.com/?post_type=pmc-gallery&p=2711059 While the World Health Organization recognized compulsive sexual behavior as sex addiction, as reported by the Mayo Clinic, and that 24 million U.S. adults could be classified as addicted to sex, it has not been classified as a mental health disorder by  the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). That does not mean that many people, including some of Hollywood’s biggest names, have not struggled with the impulse toward sex and using sex as a reward (in the same way that people might gamble or smoke as a compulsion).

The Cleveland Clinic defines sex addiction as “excessive sexual thoughts, desires, urges or behaviors that can’t be controlled and cause distress and harm to your relationships, finances and other aspects of your life.” Also called hypersexuality and compulsive sexual behavior, sex addictions are tumultuous for famous individuals due to the many temptations made easily accessible by their status and lifestyle.

From parties and drugs to fans who can’t resist getting as close as possible — literally — to some of the world’s biggest stars, acknowledging and kicking a sex addiction hasn’t been easy for these celebrities, and some of them are still suffering the consequences of their escapades to this day. Jesse James, Mike Caussin, and Lamar Odom all lost their marriages due to their repeated infidelity, for example.

Whether their compulsive sexual behavior has impacted the rest of their lives or were more of a lesson learned, the following celebrities have opened up about their experiences with sex addiction. Read on to learn about how some celebs have recovered fully, how some battle their demons daily, and how all of them were forced to face their addiction in one way or another.

The World’s First Silent Vibrator Is Utter ‘Bliss,’ Shoppers Say, & It’s Currently 20% Off https://www.sheknows.com/health-and-wellness/articles/1234723270/womanizer-vibe-silent-vibrator/ https://www.sheknows.com/health-and-wellness/articles/1234723270/womanizer-vibe-silent-vibrator/#respond Fri, 18 Oct 2024 16:36:46 +0000 https://www.sheknows.com/?p=1234723270 If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, SheKnows may receive an affiliate commission.

If you always feel a little nervous firing up your noisy vibrator, Womanizer has the toy for you. The fan-favorite brand just launched Vibe, which Womanizer says is the “world’s first silent, clitoral vibrator.” It might just be a gamechanger for anyone with thin walls or nosy neighbors — or anyone who just wants a nice, quiet time under the covers. The best part? We’ve got a code to give you 20 percent off the whole site.

But first, let’s talk Vibe. This noiseless vibrator is designed to stimulate your clitoris, which is typically the epicenter of sexual pleasure for people with vaginas — think over 10,000 nerve endings, more sensitive than the head of a penis, etc. Clitoral toys are super-popular for this reason, and Vibe promises a whole new experience.

Vibe uses UltraWave Vibration, which “combines low-frequency, rumbly vibrations with 10 powerful, harmonic resonances,” the brand explains. The stimulation is described as intense but gentle, and the whole experience should be smooth and sexy without ever crossing the line into too much. Vibe also offers three autopilot modes that last for 10 minutes each, letting you take a full journey into pleasure.

Womanizer Vibe

And of course, Vibe is totally noiseless, which early reviewers confirmed. “The toy in operation is REALLY quiet,” wrote one person, noting that they’d be “confident in using on full power with family / guests in the next room.” One reviewer described the toy as “silent but vibrant,” while another said it opened their eyes to the pleasure of silence. “Before this toy, I didn’t realise how annoying the buzzing of a normal vibrator is,” they wrote. “Being able to use a toy that is this quiet is bliss.” The shape of the toy was also much appreciated, with one person saying it lets you “find your own ridge or edge that works for you.”

Womanizer already has a dedicated fanbase, including right here at SheKnows (one of our writers nearly passed out after testing the Womanizer Premium), and it sounds like Vibe is keeping the good times going. And don’t worry, we didn’t forget about that discount code. You can use the code BUZZ20 for 20 percent off at Womanizer — yes, the whole site! — until November 17, 2024.

In other words, now’s the time to stock up on all those sexy, bestselling goodies for the end of the year (and gift-giving season! Sex toy advent calendars anyone…?). And if you’re traveling, Vibe might be the perfect toy to stash in your suitcase for some one-on-one fun with a partner (or yourself!) after the holiday party’s over. It’s gentle, powerful, and totally silent — so why not?

An Approved List of Things That Can Go Into Your Vagina https://www.sheknows.com/health-and-wellness/articles/1051099/approved-list-of-things-that-can-go-in-the-vagina/ Wed, 16 Oct 2024 14:54:17 +0000 https://www.sheknows.com/health-and-wellness/articles/1051099/approved-list-of-things-that-can-go-in-the-vagina/ If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, SheKnows may receive an affiliate commission.

Remember that scene in Broad City when Ilana sees police officers in the subway station, so she stashes her weed in her vagina? She dubs it “nature’s pocket” and it turns out she’s not the only one using this pocket in unexpected ways and putting questionable, non-approved items in her vagina. And no, we’re not just talking about creative homemade sex toys.

People with vaginas have attempted to smuggle or hide loaded pistols, Rolex watches, marijuana pipes, crack, lighters, money, cellphones, cigarettes, makeup, fireworks (yes, really), alcohol, and a host of other drugs and stolen items in their vag. Of course, few people would actually consider inserting things like loaded guns and fireworks inside their vaginas. (In case there’s any confusion — please don’t.) But sometimes, in an attempt to make things more interesting in the bedroom, some of us do make questionable decisions about what actually goes in there.

Sure, your vagina can stretch and accommodate quite a few things, but being able to do it doesn’t mean you should. “When considering what is safe to put in the vagina, it’s important to remember that the vagina is a delicate and sensitive part of the body,” Dr. Rakhee Patel, a board-certified OB-GYN with Pinewood Family Care Co. Shape, size, and cleanliness of the object are all things to consider here, because sticking the wrong thing in there can result in a host of health issues, from major injuries and tears in your vaginal canal to infections and irritation… not to speak of the embarrassment at your OB-GYN’s office.

So, quick disclaimer: make sure anything going in your vagina is clean, smooth, and skin-safe. “Our bodies’ natural bacterial balance can easily be thrown off by the foreign bacteria lodged in the crevices of toys or food,” sex coach Jenna Switzer told SheKnows in a previous interview. “Be mindful that you clean items thoroughly with a non-scented soap and use condoms on any objects that you use for penetration.” Condoms will also reveal any hidden, sharp edges on the object, potentially saving your vulva and vagina from a painful encounter.

With all that said, let’s get to the good, vagina-safe stuff. Turns out, the list of approved things you can put in your vagina is short and easy to remember.

Our mission at SheKnows is to empower and inspire women, and we only feature products we think you’ll love as much as we do. A penis

Penises are totally allowed to enter mouths, vaginas, and buttholes. Just remember to put a condom on it to avoid STIs and unwanted pregnancies. A note: Flavored condoms should only be used for oral sex, as the flavor chemicals can irritate your vaginal lining.

Fingers

Fingers (attached to hands, of course!) also feel pretty good. As long as the person’s nails are trimmed short with sharp corners filed away and kept clean, digits are a good time. You can improve your safe sex practices by washing your hands beforehand (or wearing latex gloves!) and adding lube.

Boric acid suppositories

Boric acid suppositories, like The Killer from Love Wellness, are used to treat vaginal yeast infections and/or odor, and are safe to use under the direction of a doctor. You simply insert one deep inside your vagina, “preferably at bedtime,” OB-GYN Dr. Anna Cabeca tells SheKnows. “Wearing a pad can help with any leakage,” she adds, noting that she usually prescribes 600 mg capsules to be inserted twice a day for 10 to 14 days.

Dr. Cabeca recommends using a suppository “as directed by a healthcare professional, especially if you have other conditions like diabetes or are pregnant.” You should also avoid using them if you have any open sores or cuts around your vagina, because this can cause irritation. And of course, if you experience pain, bleeding, or no improvement in your symptoms after a few days, it’s a good idea to check back in with your doctor. (PS: avoid having intercourse while using the suppositories and make sure to only use them vaginally, as boric acid is toxic if swallowed.)

This single-ingredient boric acid suppository is a bestseller for a reason. It’s ideal for balancing yeast levels and controlling vaginal odor, but doesn’t contain any fragrance or essential oils that could mess with your pH balance down there.

Lubricants

There are still lots of myths about lubricants. We’re here to tell you that oil-based lubes are actually OK, and maybe even a better choice for some, according to Lilly (who goes only by her first time), a sex toy expert and blogger at Dangerous Lilly.

“Synthetic oil-based lubes have been proven to cause vaginal infections in some, but there is much less chance for an interaction when a natural oil is used,” she tells SheKnows. “They shouldn’t be used by anyone relying on latex or polyisoprene condoms for STI and pregnancy protection, though.”

She adds that silicon-based lubricants are actually safe to use and that contrary to popular belief, “many water-based lubes are incompatible with vaginal pH or have irritating ingredients that make some folks more susceptible to vaginal infections and can increase STI transmission.” Note that silicon-based lube shouldn’t be used with silicone sex toys, though, as it can make the toys degrade. You should also avoid using lubes with sugars in them (like scented lubes), as they can also mess with your pH and lead to infection.

Period products

A good rule of thumb is that if an item was “designed specifically for vaginal use,” you can generally assume it’s safe, Patel says. That includes lubes (see above) and period products that go directly in your vagina, such as tampons and menstrual cups or discs. “These items are made with materials and ingredients that are tested for vaginal safety,” Patel explains.

Sex toys

According to statistics, the global adult sex toy market was valued at $32.7 billion in 2022. That’s a lot of satisfied customers using a lot of sex toys… although not all of them are created equal.

Sex toy materials are a complex and wide-ranging topic, but in short, the safest materials are the ones that are considered chemically stable and don’t harbor bacteria and fungi in the pores, Lilly says. This includes silicone, body-safe metal alloys like titanium, aluminum blends, stainless steel, glass, properly sealed ceramic, and wood. You also want to make sure you’re cleaning your sex toys (here’s a guide from Lilly) and replacing them if they start looking a little worse for the wear.

There are actually no regulations for sex toy materials, so be wary of claims of “FDA-approved” toys, Lilly notes. Shopping at reputable stores and reading reviews from trustworthy bloggers will help you make good sex toy choices.

Our personal recommendation: anything from celebrity-loved brand LELO, which is known for beautiful and powerful sexual instruments. Their Soraya Wave rabbit vibrator targets both your G-spot and clitoris, has an ergonomic design, and is made of safe and soft silicone.

Food & select other objects

According to Dr. Hilda Hutcherson, board-certified OB-GYN and gynecology professor at Columbia University, your main concern when considering items other than penises, fingers, period products, and sex toys is using objects with a smooth, nonporous surface, no sharp edges, no irritants, and nothing that would degrade a condom.

“You want to make sure that whatever you put in, you can completely take out,” she tells SheKnows. “That’s why most food is a problem: It’s difficult to remove it. Peeled bananas, for example.” Other foods to avoid include spicy foods like chili peppers and spreadables like peanut butter. Be aware as well that putting food items in your vagina can “cause infections and irritations,” Patel says. If you do choose to try some penetrative food play, make sure to “clean thoroughly, check for sharp edges or nubs, and use a condom to cover any part that goes inside your body,” Switzer says.

If you are into temperature play (using hot or cold objects as part of the sexual experience), avoid putting ice directly into your vagina, as it can stick to your delicate skin. Instead, cover it with a condom to create a barrier. Very hot surfaces can also cause damage because “the [vaginal] lining is very delicate and can easily be burned,” Hutcherson adds.

Again, the safest way to play with your food is to put a condom on it. That way, you avoid risks attached to bacteria, irritation or pH imbalances. As long as the item is big enough to be removed, has no sharp or uncomfortable edges, and is not easily breakable (like a large cucumber or squash), you should be fine.

Non-vagina safe items: douches and vaginal washes

Douching or using harsh, scented soaps or vaginal washes are a no-go in your vagina, Patel says, because they can “can disrupt the natural pH and bacterial balance, leading to infections or irritation.” Fun fact: your vagina is self-cleaning, so you really don’t need any extra products down there to do it for you.

Beyond that, remember that any product not specifically designed to go in your vagina really isn’t meant to be in there — so if you’re planning on experimenting with zucchinis in bed, you’ll want to take precautions. And in general, Patel recommends being cautious with what you put in your vagina and prioritizing products specifically designed for vaginal health. “Always read labels and instructions, and when in doubt, consult with a healthcare professional,” she says. “Remember, each person is different, so what works for one might not work for another. It’s essential to listen to your body and seek professional advice if you have concerns or experience discomfort.”

The Best Anal Sex Toys for Every Occasion (& Experience Level) https://www.sheknows.com/health-and-wellness/articles/1139529/best-anal-sex-toys/ Tue, 15 Oct 2024 21:33:13 +0000 https://www.sheknows.com/love-and-sex/articles/1139529/best-anal-sex-toys/ If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, SheKnows may receive an affiliate commission.

Ah butts, the great equalizer. Everyone’s got ‘em and the ability to feel immense tushy pleasure. Whether you’re a beginner or you’ve been around the booty block, we’ve got the best anal sex toys to make your anal exploration a thrilling adventure.

Of course, if it’s your first time using anal sex toys, it’s normal to feel intimidated and nervous — or even a little scared, especially if nothing has ever been up there before. Remember to go slow, communicate if you’re with a partner(s), and pay attention to what feels good — and what feels like too much.

“The first thing to consider when you’re venturing into anal territory is how an anus becomes a pleasure zone for both male and female-bodied people,” says Gigi Engle, a certified sex and relationship psychotherapist and resident intimacy expert at dating app, 3Fun. “People of all (or no) genders have a butt hole and it is a potential erogenous zone for everyone.”

We have lots of excellent anal sex toys to recommend for all levels of experience, but first, let’s go over a few cardinal rules of anal play to ensure you have a good time once you rev up your shiny new toy.

Anal Sex Toy Tips

“Stigma and shame just leads people to engage in anal without knowing what they’re doing,” Engle tells SheKnows. “The anus is very sensitive. It doesn’t lube up or naturally stretch the way a vagina does.”

Because of that, there are a few things to know before jumping in with your anal sex toy. “If you go for anal sex immediately, without any warm up, you’re going to hurt someone,” Engle cautions. “You risk tearing, anal fissures, or a trip to the ER.” Yep, it’s that serious — so don’t skip any of these simple safety steps.

Lube it up. When it comes to any kind of anal play, “lube is your golden ticket,” Engle says. (And no, spit isn’t an acceptable substitution.) “Get yourself some reliable lube. The wetter the better,” Engle says. Without lube, you’re looking at potentially hurting yourself or your partner. For silicone toys, be sure to use water-based lube, such as, Sliquid H2O and KY Liquid, because silicone lube will bond with your silicone toys and cause damage (besides making them sticky and uncomfortable). However, if you’re using a metal or glass toy, definitely go with a silicone lube like Überlube — it will last forever and can be used in the shower!

Grab a condom. If you’re engaging in anal with a partner, make sure to have a condom handy, especially if you don’t know their current STI status, Engle says. (BTW, that’s always a good thing to talk about before having sex of any kind.) “The delicate tissue of the anus is highly susceptible to STIs,” Engle explains. “Safer sex is better sex.” That includes putting a condom on any penises or sex toys that are involved.

Start with a finger. Start opening things up with one well-lubed finger, then try two, then a small butt plug. Make sure to take your time. “The anus is not a muscle that naturally stretches to allow objects inside of it,” Engle says. “We know exactly what it’s primary physical function is, and it’s not an entryway. It needs to be gently stretched and kneaded.”

Keep it shallow. Whether you’re penetrating with a penis, toy, or finger, there’s no need to go super deep. “You don’t need to shove anything super far up a rectum to feel sensation,” Engle explains. In fact, most of your anal nerves are within the first two inches of your anal opening. “This is a nerve-rich cluster that can be stimulated with fingers, a small (or large, depending on your experience level) butt plug,” Engle says. “There is a common misconception that because the anus is not a closed canal like the vagina, you should stick things up as far as they can go. This is not the case.”

Be patient. “Anal training can take anywhere from a few hours to a few months,” Engle says, so don’t rush yourself. “If you move too quickly, you could wind up in serious pain. The chances of getting to try anal again once you’ve hurt someone are slim to none. Better safe than sorry.”

Now that you’re lubed up, strap in (pun intended) and let’s get anal.

Sex Experts Share Their 12 Best Recommendations for Water-Based Lubes https://www.sheknows.com/health-and-wellness/articles/3089620/best-water-based-lubes/ https://www.sheknows.com/health-and-wellness/articles/3089620/best-water-based-lubes/#respond Tue, 17 Sep 2024 21:46:55 +0000 https://www.sheknows.com/?p=3089620 If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, SheKnows may receive an affiliate commission.

One of the pros of living in the 21st century is how much we’ve opened up about sexuality. That said, this progress doesn’t come without its downsides. With the boom in sexual wellness, shopping personal lubricants can be rather overwhelming. That’s why we talked to two sex experts and asked about their recommendations for the best water-based lubes.

Knowing what you’re looking for and what questions to ask can help you feel a little less anxious when you’re shopping. For instance, how do you know if a lubricant is water-, silicone-, or oil-based? What ingredients should you look for, and which should you avoid? When can’t you use a lubricant internally? The answer to these questions will provide insight that empowers you to make the best decisions for your pleasure and sexual health.

Below, sexuality educator Cindy Luquin, AASECT, and sexologist Carol Queen, PhD, provide their favorite water-based lubes, share what to know about shopping for one, and leave us with final considerations.

Best Water-Based Lubes, According to Experts, at a Glance

Best Overall: Bloomi Smooth Water-Based Personal Lubricant
Best Hydrating: Maude Shine Organic Aloe- and Water-Based Lubricant
Best for Sensitive Skin: Pjur Woman Aqua
Best Wellness: Playground Love Sesh
Best Gel: Smile Makers Generous Gel
Best Antimicrobial: Coconu Water-Based Personal Lubricant
Best on Amazon: #LubeLife Water-Based Lubricant
Best for Vaginal Dryness: Lola Personal Lubricant
Best Flavored: Wicked Simply Passion Fruit
Most Like Body Fluids: Personal Fav Whet
Thickest Consistency: Good Vibes Good Lube Gel Lubricant
Best Organic: Good Clean Love Almost Naked Personal Lubricant

What Is Water-Based Lube Best For?

According to Luquin, you can reach for a water-based lube whenever you’re considering having sex, and not necessarily just partnered or penetrative. The entire point of a lube—water-based or otherwise—is to reduce friction. “This makes it more pleasurable and facilitates sexual experiences,” Luquin adds.

Dr. Queen adds that using a water-based lube is a must when your sexual activities include latex or silicone. You see, oil-based lubes will “eat holes” in latex and damage silicone or latex toys. Plus, “Many users feel that water-based lubes feel more like bodily fluids,” says Dr. Queen. If you’re looking for something that feels natural and is safe for your body, condoms, and toys, water-based lubes are your best bet.

What Ingredients to Look for in Water-Based Lube

“Really the main thing you want is water,” says Dr. Queen. She adds that you also want “a molecule or substance that makes it slippery, and something that acts as a preservative.” Vegan folks or people with sensitive skin might also want to opt for plant-based lubes.

If you’re experiencing vaginal dryness or notice that you’re a little raw post-coitus, Luquin says it’s also a good idea to look for aloe vera in the lube formulations. “Think about when you get a sunburn. You put aloe on it because it’s very cooling and soothing to the skin. It’s kind of the same idea here,” she says.

Even when the ingredients list looks right, it may take some trial and error to figure out which lube works best for you and your partner. Consider things like:

Texture: “You might like it light and slick, or thicker and more cushy,” Dr. Queen says.
Scent and taste: Think about whether you want it to even smell or taste like anything in the first place
Duration: “Water-based lubes dry out eventually,” says Dr. Queen. Check the label on the lube you want before committing. Worst case, Dr. Queen says you can “rehydrate” the lube by flicking some water onto it.
pH balance: “Lubes that are pH-balanced are an especially good idea if you find you have issues with vaginal health. For some, simply throwing off the pH is enough to give you trouble,” says Dr. Queen.

What Ingredients to Avoid in Water-Based Lube

Both Dr. Queen and Luquin agree that there are a handful of ingredients you should avoid at all costs. Luquin, for one, cautions against lubes that contain parabens and alcohol. “You want things that are a little bit more sensitive for that delicate area so you can be healthy overall,” she says.

Dr. Queen adds that you don’t want your lube to contain sugar, especially if you’re going to use it internally. Another thing she notes is that some people might want to avoid glycerin even though not everyone has a bad reaction to it. “It’s one of the agents that can make a lube slick,” says Dr. Queen, but it’s not the only one and, as such, isn’t worth the risk of discomfort.

The 12 Best Water-Based Lubes

Bloomi Lube

BEST OVERALL

Bloomi Smooth Water-Based Personal Lubricant

Luquin’s favorite thing about Bloomi is that the brand is as clean as it gets, meaning that their products are all formulated with the least amount of harmful products. “They really did a great job at making sure that it’s healthier and that it’s going to not throw off your pH balance,” says Luquin. And since it’s water-based, it’s also compatible with most condoms and sex toys.

I’ve used Bloomi for myself and I love that it feels luxurious while having an affordable price point. This lube does its job of keeping you slippery and doesn’t get tacky. Additionally, the brand is founded by a sexologist—which means that it has a sex-positive ethos, and we can certainly get behind that.

Key ingredients: Water, sunflower seed extract, and green tea extract
Size: 3 oz.
Flavored/Scented: No

Pros:

  • TSA friendly
  • Affordable and widely available
  • Doesn’t throw off your pH balance
  • The brand is founded by a sexologist
  • Formulated with good-for-you ingredients

Cons:

  • Only comes in one size
  • There is no pump dispenser

Maude Lube

BEST HYDRATING

Maude Shine Organic Aloe- and Water-Based Lubricant

Maude’s Shine Organic is truly one of the best water-based lubes you’ll ever find. Aside from gliding on ever so smoothly, it helps keep your vulva in good shape. “The nice thing about having an aloe-based lube is that it’s going to be more hydrating,” says Luquin. “It’s going to make sure the skin is still healthy, moist, and lubricated—even after you wipe away.”

We love that this product is available in two, four, and eight ounces and that it’s free of parabens, fragrances, and glycerin. It’s also vegan, cruelty-free, and pH balanced. Unlike products that come in a tube, this bottle’s dispenser makes it easy to get even the very last drop of lube.

Key ingredients: Water, aloe extract
Size: 2, 4, or 8 oz.
Flavored/Scented: No

Pros:

  • Pump dispenser
  • Comes in three different sizes
  • Aloe in formula is very hydrating
  • Doesn’t throw off your pH balance

Cons:

  • Not safe for ingestion in large amounts
12 Best Water-Based Lubes, According to Sex Experts

BEST FOR SENSITIVE SKIN

Pjur Woman Aqua

$11 $14 21% off
Buy Now

This earned the Best for Sensitive Skin award because it’s one of the few lubes that’s undergone the rigorous process of dermatological testing. “They’ve actually done the testing to make sure that there’s no irritation to the skin,” says Luquin. “This has proven to be moisturizing and makes it easier and more fun to play around.”

Pjur Aqua, admittedly, may not have the most chic packaging, but you’ll easily look past that when you see its star-studded ingredients list.

Key ingredients: Water, glycerin
Size: 3.4 oz.
Flavored/Scented: No

Pros:

  • Hypoallergenic
  • Dermatologically tested
  • Lubricates and moisturizes

Cons:

  • Not widely available in stores
Playground lube

BEST WELLNESS

Playground Love Sesh

In case you didn’t know, Playground is a sexual wellness brand that’s backed by pop superstar Christina Aguilera. “This is almost like a sexual skincare brand and it’s been clinically tested,” says Luquin. “This lube includes adaptogens, which are herbs that enhance pleasure.”

The star ingredients are Ashwagandha, which is fabulous for de-stressing and easing your nervous system; black cohosh, “which decreases vaginal dryness,” says Luquin; and horny goat weed, which is pretty self-explanatory. “I don’t think I’ve seen any other brand include those types of things into a lubricant,” Luquin shares. There are also skin-loving ingredients like hyaluronic acid, vitamin E, and fermented bamboo extract.

Key ingredients: Ashwagandha, black cohosh, horny goat weed, hyaluronic acid, vitamin E, and fermented bamboo extract
Size: 3.7 oz.
Flavored/scented: No

Pros:

  • Plant-based
  • FDA approved
  • Fragrance-free
  • Woman-owned and founded
  • Formulated with good-for-you herbs and adaptogens
  • Contains horny goat weed and other natural ingredients

Cons:

  • Doesn’t have a dispenser

Smile Makers lube

BEST GEL

Smile Makers Generous Gel

$12 $20 40% off
Buy Now

Since they’re water-based, most of the lubes we tried had a rather liquidy consistency. However, that can get a little too slippery—making it difficult to stay on hands or body parts. That’s why we love Smile Makers Generous Gel, which is fragrance-free, cruelty-free, vegan, and formulated without parabens.

This lube is silky, sensual, and long-lasting. In fact, one of my former partners dubbed this his favorite lube ( I have more than a dozen) and commented on how slick this stays. Needless to say, this pick remains in my nightstand.

Dipotassium glycyrrhizate and methyl propanediol—the key ingredients here—respectively work to regenerate the skin and maintain that silky feeling.

Key ingredients: Dipotassium glycyrrhizate, methyl propanediol
Size: 1 oz.
Flavored/Scented: No

Pros:

  • Hydrating
  • Fragrance-free
  • Widely available
  • Thick consistency
  • Remains silky and doesn’t get sticky

Cons:

  • Only one small size available
Coconu lube

BEST ANTIMICROBIAL

Coconu Water-Based Personal Lubricant

$23 $25 8% off
Buy Now

Coconu is one of the best personal lubricant brands around and offers water- and oil-based options, so make sure you’re grabbing the option with the all-white packaging.  (The light blue box is oil-based and not what we tested for this article.) As you might’ve guessed from the name, Coconu uses coconut water as its base.

“Fans of drinking coconut water for its nutrients, electrolyte content, and antimicrobial and antioxidant potential may be enthusiastic about trying it in lube form,” says Dr. Queen. Since it’s applied topically, it may not deliver the nutrients or electrolytes in the same way as ingesting it. But it’s still good as an antimicrobial. Plus, “This brand pH-balances their product, too,” Dr. Queen adds.

Key ingredients: Coconut water
Size: 3 oz.
Flavored/Scented: No

Pros:

  • A little goes a long way
  • Contains antimicrobial properties
  • Doesn’t throw off your pH balance
  • Free of dyes, fragrances, and parabens

Cons:

  • Doesn’t have a dispenser
12 Best Water-Based Lubes, According to Sex Experts

LubeLife Water-Based Lubricant

$10 $13 23% off

You can get a 2-, 4-, 8-, 12-, or 32-ounce bottle of this Amazon best seller. Sadly, only the biggest size comes with a dispenser, so you’ll have to squeeze the last drop out of other bottles. We love that this product isn’t formulated with parabens, glycerin, or silicone. If you won’t take our word for it, perhaps you’ll trust the more than 150,000 people who’ve awarded this 4.5 stars.

Key ingredients: Water
Size: 2, 4, 8, 12, or 32 oz.
Flavored/Scented: No

Pros:

  • Vegan
  • Affordable
  • Several size options

Lola lube

BEST FOR VAGINAL DRYNESS

Lola Personal Lubricant

There is a lot to love about this lube, especially that it’s hydrating and moisturizing without containing additives. The formula doesn’t have any synthetic flavors or fragrances, and it’s pH-balanced so as to not cause a reaction in your genital area. I’ve used this lube during my solo love sessions and noticed that it absorbs easily and leaves my vulva and vagina feeling like they just drank the most refreshing glass of water.

Key ingredients: Water
Size: 1.7 oz.
Flavored/Scented: No

Pros:

  • Hypoallergenic
  • Gynecologist-approved
  • One-handed pump dispenser
  • Very hydrating and moisturizing
  • Doesn’t throw off your pH balance

Cons:

  • Only one small size available
12 Best Water-Based Lubes, According to Sex Experts

BEST FLAVORED

Wicked Simply Passion Fruit

$11 $12 8% off
Buy Now

This is Dr. Queen’s favorite flavored lube. “It’s delicious—like, I-would-flavor-my-water-with-it delicious,” she laughs. “Sorbitol and stevia add sweetness, and it’s enhanced with olive leaf extract, which may have an antimicrobial effect.”

There are a couple of things to point out here. For one, Wicked says folks can use this lube internally. “I never recommend flavored lube use in the vagina or anus,” says Dr. Queen. “In my opinion, it should be kept to oral play.” Also, while Dr. Queen thinks that this has a really nice flavor, she points out that some people may find it too sweet.

Key ingredients: Water, olive leaf extract, and stevia
Size: 2.3 and 4 oz.
Flavored/Scented: Flavored

Pros:

  • Vegan
  • Great taste
  • Doesn’t throw off your pH balance
  • Free of glycerin, parabens, and propylene glycol

Cons:

  • Shouldn’t be used internally

Personal Fav lube

MOST LIKE BODY FLUIDS

Personal Fav Whet

Though I’ve tried dozens of lubricants, I’d never heard of Personal Fave. In testing it for this article, I was really impressed with how life-like it is. This plant-based sex serum, as Personal Fav branded the product, contains horny goat weed and hemp. It also comes in a chic, matte black bottle with sky blue font on it. It has a single-hand dispenser, which makes it so easy to use, and hydrating aloe to soothe any friction you feel. I used this with a wand vibrator and didn’t notice any damage to it—but I did notice how sultry this lube felt.

Key ingredients: Aloe vera, chamomile, horny goat weed, ginseng, and hemp
Size: 1 oz.
Flavored/Scented: No

Pros:

  • Plant-based
  • Chic packaging
  • Feels really silky
  • Formulated with skin-loving ingredients

Cons:

  • Only one small size available
12 Best Water-Based Lubes, According to Sex Experts

THICKEST CONSISTENCY

Good Vibes Good Lube Gel Lubricant

$9 $10 10% off
Buy Now

“Our Good Lube Gel is thicker than most lubricants, and we tested it to be as safe for sensitive individuals as possible,” says Dr. Queen, adding that this pick is also pH-balanced. Because it’s a thicker consistency, you feel more cushion, so to speak. According to Dr. Queen, this water-based lube would work especially well for anal play. This formula doesn’t contain glycerin, flavors, or fragrances, which makes it perfect for those who have sensitivities. One thing about this, though, is that the squeeze top isn’t ideal—especially since this has a thicker consistency. If you have trouble squeezing the product out, take the top off and try that way.

Key ingredients: Water, plant cellulose
Size: 2 and 8.5 oz.
Flavored/Scented: No

Pros:

  • Two ideal sizes
  • Thick enough for anal play
  • Free of glycerin, parabens, and propylene glycol

Cons:

  • Doesn’t have a dispenser
12 Best Water-Based Lubes, According to Sex Experts

BEST ORGANIC

Good Clean Love Almost Naked Personal Lubricant

Dr. Queen likes the Good Clean Love Almost Naked water-based lube because it’s “really comfortable to use.” It’s also pH-balanced, organic, non-sticky, good for those with sensitivities, and lightly flavored. Since it does have a slight taste, you might not want to grab this if you’re looking for something more straightforward. This is the best organic pick because it’s 95 percent certified organic ingredients and free of petrochemicals, parabens, glycerin, and artificial fragrances. I tried this for myself and found that it was a bit too sticky for my liking, but there are troves of others who swear by this natural lube.

Key ingredients: Aloe, agar
Size: 4 oz.
Flavored/Scented: Light flavor

Pros:

  • Vegan
  • 95 percent organic
  • Feels similar to natural lubrication
  • Free of glycerin, parabens, and petrochemicals

Cons:

  • Doesn’t have a dispenser

Final Thoughts

In addition to being aware of the ingredients in a lube, you should also be mindful of whether or not it’s still good. “If you’ve had a bottle of lube sitting there for a while, just smell it before you use it,” says Luquin. “Make sure that there’s no foul scent. If there is, it’s probably expired and you need to go buy a new one.”

Also, whenever you try a new lube, Dr. Queen advises to keep an eye out for any reaction—like itchiness or soreness. “This can happen with a latex sensitivity, too, so figure out what’s going on, if you can, to protect yourself from repeated irritant exposure.”

And in case you couldn’t tell from our tone in this article, using lube—out of necessity or recreationally—is absolutely nothing to be ashamed of.

OK friends, when you think of porn, are you immediately turned off? Yeah, we hear that. It’s 2023, and yet it’s still not an easy task to find porn that you actually want to watch, meaning a website featuring hot, actually good porn that doesn’t overwhelmingly prioritize the male gaze or the male orgasm. Sure, you can wade through the videos to find one where female pleasure and (over-the-top-slash-faked) female orgasms are the focus — but even then, there’s the distinct feeling that because of the way she’s being filmed, there is still a man calling the shots. Let’s be honest, even if you’re watching it with a male partner, you may get the sense that the porn you’re trying to enjoy isn’t for you. And that can make it harder to lose yourself in the story or the sensations the way you’d want to — the way that you should be able to, with good porn.

In other words: where are the porn sites that cater to the female gaze, that honor female sexuality in all its beautiful forms and that don’t objectify women in a way that will have you itching to take a shower immediately after viewing (in a bad way)? Where are the porn sites that feel current and up to date with what we want from sexual media today?

Fear no more, friend, because we have found some legitimately great porn sites for you, the modern, self-loving woman. If you’re tired of porn that feels overwhelmingly straight and cis-male-centric, you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the following selection of sites. And while we’re at it, it’s probably the right time to treat yourself to some new sex toys to really turn up the heat.

Quick PSA, though: please take care and don’t browse this one at your desk, because you’ll be able to access some NSFW websites from here on out. Click with caution and, when it’s time for You-time, have fun!
